COMPANY EXPECTATIONS:
def SOL
COMPANY / CREW EXPECTATIONS:
Loyalty & Respect
- def SOL dancers should remain true to their craft and their dance
family. Since the performance groups represent def SOL and require a
great deal of commitment, we require that dancers limit their involvement
with other performance or competitive groups outside of def SOL. Although
we strongly encourage our dancers to pursue outside training we require
that competitive involvement (especially in
Hip Hop) remain through def SOL in order to avoid conflicts of interest as
well as ensure sufficient time-management with class and performance
schedules.
To keep def SOL alive into the future, your support and promotion of the
company is vital. While our instructor opportunities are currently limited
we may be offering positions for part time company choreographers as well
as community/workshop instructors so please let us know if you would like
to be considered. For those interested in pursuing teaching opportunities
outside of def SOL we ask that you discuss your opportunities with the
director to avoid any competitive or professional conflicts. If conflicts
arise, you may be asked to give up your crew position. If you receive
personal requests to instruct for a ‘non-competitive’ organization such as
a school or community workshop we would love to help you set these up.
Please approach us with these requests and we can organize and contract
you for the event in return for promoting def SOL.
Commitment & Dedication:
This year, crew dancers will rehearse a minimum of 2 hours/week for
company shows (i.e. Street Stylez) and competitions plus additional
rehearsals for public performances. With extra rehearsals commonly held on
weekends to prepare for competition and performances, being on a
performance group is a large commitment. When dancing at this level it is
assumed that your dance group’s practices, rehearsals and performances
will take priority over any other activities you may be involved in and
that you will always try your absolute best to be available and flexible
with your schedule.
Skill & Style:
We are of course looking for dancers with a strong background or natural
talent in hip hop and other urban dance forms but there are several other
attributes that are equally important. For example, the number one
assumption dancers make following an unsuccessful audition is that they
weren’t ‘good enough’. Most dancers that audition are extremely talented
however it is important to recognize that the choreographer is also
looking for dancers with similar styles in order to create the most
‘blended’ group possible.
Performance:
In addition to having great skills and style, it is also important that
dancers know how to perform on stage and bring ‘character’ to their
routines. This is an asset that is developed over time therefore
experienced performers may be given preference over those who may not be
as familiar with public performance, audience interaction and stage
awareness etc.
Personality:
One of the most important traits we look for when building a performance
group is personality. Being in a dance crew requires a ‘team’ mentality,
patience and the ability to motivate and encourage each other. If crew
members complement each other the result with be noticeable when they
perform together on stage. Dancers that bring positive and respectful
attitudes into their training and performance are top choice!
Representation:
Be aware that as part of the def SOL group we expect that all performance
crew dancers and instructors be positive role models in AND outside of the
studio.
